Dream Design: A Colorful Breakfast Nook

Right now, I am so in love with the idea of a breakfast nook. I've always liked the idea of having two dining spaces; one formal and one casual. When I saw this particular nook, just fell head over heels. It's bright, it's airy, and it's colorful. Three characteristics I covet in design!

But what most appeals to me about this room is that it can very easily be emulated. Find the colors and patterns you love and throw them together! With a neutral backdrop, it can all pull together easily! Enjoy all of your favorite colors! And for your enjoyment, I whipped up a little design board for more inspiration on how to create your own colorful nook!

1. For this room, I chose to go with a true gray as the wall color. Gray is actually my favorite neutral. It's a bit more modern than your typical beige and cream. Benjamin Moore's Silver Dollar is a great "true" gray. It will make all of the colorful accessories really pop.

2. Perhaps the focal point of the nook is the pedestal table. White keeps it crisp and, again, neutral. The key making this room work is to keep the major items subtle and then fill in with lots of colorful accessories. For this board I chose the Odyssey White Dining Table by CB2 ($199.00).

3. Start the color parade off with your chair choice! These Tutti Frutti Stacking Chairs by Target (2 for $69.99) are a fun shape and come in several different colors. We actually own them in blue. Of course, any color would be great. I chose pink for this board because

4. I love this pendant lamp! The photo above displays a simple white lamp, but I really loved the pattern and color of the Retro Honeycomb Drum Shade Pendant from Shades of Light ($129.00). If you have a similar set-up as the photo. This colorful lamp can break up the white space if you choose to forgo curtains.

5. Textiles is where you really get to have some fun. These throw pillow are all from The Inglenook Decor, and while they are gorgeous they are a bit pricey ($64, $95, & $80 respectively). You could easily hunt down fun fabrics from your local craft stores or even design your own on Spoonflower and make your own. Same with curtains, if you choose to use them. Short, cafe styled curtains would be another fun way to break up the large windows.

6. I kept accessories down to a minimum for this board. There are so many cute things out there, it's hard to control myself, but this space doesn't necessarily lend itself to lots of knick-knacks. Table decor should be kept to a minimum, to keep as much room open for actually eating. This cute Peacock Blue Recycled Glass Vase from Pier 1 ($39.95) and this Ceramic Owls also from West Elm ($9.00) are adorable table toppers. I also added this Oversize Seagrass Basket by West Elm ($129.00) to stash extra pillows that might get in the way with extra guests.

Do you love breakfast nooks? Or are you more partial to a different dining space? What characteristics do you favor in design? Share below!

Happy Royal Wedding Day!

While I didn't follow it avidly, I do appreciate the romance that is seeping out of humanity because of the royal wedding!

Today is the day that every woman will wonder, even if only for a split second what it feels like to be a princess! (Or Duchess anyway!)

Spooky Inspiration

I am so ready for October. Not only does the weather cool down (which I'm dying for) but Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. It's just another chance to get creative. Now, I'm all for the orange and black candies, spider rings, and googly eyed cupcakes for a younger crowd, but Josh and I are considering hosting a small Halloween shindig and those duds aren't going to fly.

It's time to take Halloween to the next level. Sophisticate it, if you will. Here are some inspiration pictures I am loving!

I have got to make those apples! They look so creepy. And the best thing about these ideas is that most of the materials can be found in your own home already. It's an easy way to put a little spook into your home. Enjoy!

Steal-Worthy Ideas

The whole point of perusing the wedding blog-o-sphere is to find ideas to steal. Plain and simple.

Well, it goes without saying, that I have find quite a few things that were steal-worthy, including this genius idea from Ms. Fancy Pants. It used to be a huge trend to have disposable cameras at each table for guests to take pictures at the wedding and leave for you develop. It's a great way to catch those fun cadid moments. Unfortunately, this doesn't really work for the way our wedding is set up. We don't have assigned seating and not having pictures in digital form wouldn't make me very happy.

Enter this tutorial. Business cards with information leading to a Flickr account to which all guests have access. This way, digital photos can be uploaded and shared with everyone who attended the wedding, and even those who couldn't come.

So here is our version:

It took barely anytime at all at the cost for 100 business cards was $11.97 + $3.49 to have the address update put on the back. These are going to go inside the favor bags (homemade peppermint bark), so that people will already have them. A very creative and useful idea.

What ideas have you stolen from around the interwebs??

So, I've been stocking up on my HGTV...

That's right people, the FH and I are moving to a new apartment in a little over one month. Gah! Honestly but I couldn't be more excited. Our current (and first) apartment is teeny teeny tiny and that is putting it nicely. At about 400 sq. feet we use the same space for our dining room, office, library, and kitchen. The bedroom can pretty much only be a bedroom. It is quite cramped.

Our new place is going is two bedrooms (thank heavens, we will have an actual office!), two bathrooms, and 814 sq. feet. We'll have a relatively updated kitchen (no more yellow stove!!!) and a fire place.

Needless to say, I've been flitting about around all of my favorite blogs (well at least all of the home decorating ones) looking for inspiration to make our new apartment a place that reflects who we are and that we can really enjoy. So for your viewing pleasure, I have included a few pictures below of what I am dying to include in our new home. Enjoy.

Have no fear! Once we are able to move in, I fully intend to blog about the whole process. Painting, projects, before and afters. All of it! I know you are so excited.

Honeymoon Inspiration Board

Dreaming of something tropical. Josh and I have decided to go to Cancun for our honeymoon. These are actual pictures from the resort we're looking at. Isn't it gorgeous? I've been in love with the vintage feel of that swimsuit and sun dress. How can you not have fun when you're all dressed up? And since the clothes speak so loudly on their own, I thought more neutral accessories would go with more than just one outfit. Enjoy!
